Copy Drive Issue

My primary windows hd is starting to go bad. So far it still works, but
I'm starting to get some chkdsk errors. So...I have a brand new hd just
like the one in my computer. Same make / model, etc.

I install the drive on SATA 4 so my drive config looks like:
SATA 1: maxtor 160gb primary drive, one partition ntfs, active
SATA 2: seagate 250gb data drive ntfs, not active
SATA 4: maxtor 160gb drive, NTFS partition primary active

I have tried both Norton Ghost 9.0 and DriveImage XML to just do a drive
to drive copy. After the copy, I remove SATA1 and move SATA4 to SATA1
and reboot. This should have created an exact duplicate of my config.
What I see is:

Low resolution windows xp startup screen
High resolution xp screen (which would normally say loading personal
settings, but never does)
Window goes blank to a deep blue background color
I hear the logon wav file
It sits for 1-2 minutes
The high res windows xp logo screen returns
I hear logoff wav file
Then it goes into an infinite loop
logon.wav
logoff.wav

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Ok...so after many wasted hours here is the result:
BEFORE making a backup copy:
regedit: HKLM\System\MountedDevices delete all DosDevices entries
