I'm trying to copy 171 document names only into an excel spread sheet so that
I can then talk about the status of each document I don't seem to be able to
copy this information and then paste it into excel
I've tried Ctrl shift ctrl C ctrl V and nothing happens I've tried the Copy
function from the drop down menu but the paste option doesn't appear in excel

Have you tried pasting them into a blank word document and then ctrl v ing
the text from the word document into excel? that might work, other than that
i'm not sure how.

From what type of file are you trying to copy?
What do you expect Control shift to do?
If you want to select all, try Control A.
If you want to select a specific range, select one end of the range, then
Shift select the other end.
If you want to select a non-contiguous range, use Control select on each
part of the range.
Having selected your required range, then Control C

I tried pasting them into a blank word doc but instead of pasting the
document name -- the document itself is pasted -- thanks for the suggestion
though

Like the names of files in a folder?

If yes, then I use this technique:

I open a command prompt:
Windows start button|Run
cmd
(in windows xp)
and hit enter.

Then I traverse to the drive and folder that contains the files.

I type:
dir > c:\myList.txt

This creates a text file in the root drive of my C: drive (away from the folder
with the names).

Then I close that window.
Open excel and use File|Open to open that text file.

After I'm done, I can clean up that .txt file.

You want to copy document file names from a folder into Excel?

Several methods to accomplish this.......I like Tushar's best if importing
to Excel.

To add a "Print Directory" feature to Explorer, go to
this KB Article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q272623&

Or you can download Printfolder 1.2 from.....

http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/

I use PF 1.2 and find it to be more than adequate with custom
features.

OR Go to DOS(Command) prompt and directory.
Type DIR >MYFILES.TXT

All the above create a *.TXT file which can be opened in Notepad or
Excel.

One more method if you want to by-pass the *.TXT file and pull
directly to Excel is to use Tushar Mehta's Excel Add-in. This allows
filtering and sorting once you have the data in Excel.

http://www.tushar-mehta.com/ scroll down to Add-ins>Directory
Listing.

Download the ZIP file and un-zip to your Office\Library folder.
