Copy and Paste Facility in Word 2002

A colleague has asked me for help, but I cannot see what the problem is. He
is working with Word 2002, sometimes when he is amending a document i.e.
copying and pasting, whilst these options are not greyed out, they do not
appear to work. He can type into the document, but if he wants to use the
copy and paste facility, he has to close the document and reopen it. Has
anyone got any suggestions? TIA
