copied wps files on disk won't open

Upgraded to XP pro from ME. Copied wps documents won't open with Word. Dialog box says file could be corrupted. But notepad will display files but not in letter form. More elongated and have to do much scrolling to put in proper prospective to read. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
