generally you need to access the router and input your ISP's IP , DNS ,
Gateway etc. and make sure DHCP is turned on.

since you can connect to the other computer ...DHCP is probably working ok

use "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt while you have a connection to the
net ...

how do i access the router?

Usually it's a web interface reachable using the LAN IP of the router -
connect to the router, find your default gateway (assigned by the router via
DHCP) by typing

ipconfig <enter>
in a command prompt, then going to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in your browser
(xxx....being the IP of your default gateway specified in ipconfig)

Check with the router mfr. for info if you need more help.

Tony,

With a cable modem, the MAC address of the host pc is probably registered in the
modem. So the modem doesn't recognise the router.

You have three possibilities:
1) Call your ISP and ask them how to register the router.
2) If the router does MAC spoofing, RTFM and have it spoof the host MAC
address.
3) Force the modem to recognise the router.
- Power the modem, router, and pc's off.
- Leave everything off 10 - 15 minutes.
- Power on the modem.
- After 5 minutes, power on the router.
- After a minute or so, power on the pc's.

IIWY, I would do #2 if possible, #3 if not, and #1 as absolutely last resort.

Cheers,
Chuck
