white..have to go to start menu to return to whatever page I was on
originally... where did this come from and how on earth do I get rid of it?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do

Your best option would be to download a program, such as AdAware, which will
remove such malicious programs. You can download AdAware from:

Please note that, once installed, you should download the latest reference file
to ensure that you have the latest protection. You may also be interested in
