Cooling Units not exceeding 75mm in height

Hi,

Does anyone know of a cooling fan that is compatible with an AMD Athlon
XP 2800+ CPU using a socket A fixture, which has a slow RPM and a noise
level of less than 21 db's? In addition this fan should be less than
75mm high.

I have a SilverstoneTek LC11 case and the maximum height of the cooling
unit cannot exceed 75mm. I like the look of the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU
Super Flower Cooler but it doesn't fit the Shuttle MN31N micro-atx form
factor motherboard and so I am looking for a similar spec cooling
system.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Kevin.

Yep. No reply as yet. I have also emailed Zalman who make the cooler
without any response. Makes you wonder if its all worth it!!

Some months back, Tigerdirect had a cooler that was IIRC 70mm high.
Maybe they still have it.

Aside from the noise consideration, what coolers have you found that
would fit?

The following seems to barely meet your requirements for both noise and
height:

Not seen the application, but you can...
o Modify a flower cooler re height limit + Side-orientated fan
o Use a 1U cooler with 25mm depth fan (more pressure, less noise)
o Use a 1U passive cooler with 25mm depth fan (taller cooler)
o Use a cooler with 60mm fan at the side (eg, 2U rack use Xeon, P4, Athlon)

Modify an OEM cooler to use a larger fan.

Use a large heatsink with remote fan on the rear of the case nearby and get
creative with some thermoformable ducting. You can use Foamex, thin ABS
(althou that tends to need vacuum forming), several materials available. It
will take more airflow than usual for this cooling solution if not careful.

Take a look at the rackmount options, but beware of noise:
o CPU coolers are active heatsinks - they use a fan
o Fans allow a smaller/lighter/cheaper heatsink to be used
o Reduce the size of the heatsink and you can need more airflow to compensate

Rack environments also have to consider limited airflow re low profile casing,
eg, 1U is 44.45mm high, 2U is 88.89mm high at outer case thickness limits.

All comes down to what thermal dissipation.

Thanks for the info Dorothy. Unfortunately you are talking to a
complete newbie when it comes to building a PC so custom modification
is not something I am considering as such. I have thought about the
heatsink component though. I have a standard heatsink that AMD supply
with the CPU. As I haven't managed to find a complete solution I am
going to install the heatsink and run the machine with two fans, both
internal, one intake fan at the front and one exhaust at the rear that
exhaust the air off the mobo.

I'll monitor the CPU heat and see if this is adequate, if not then I
may look for some external cooling solution.

Regards.

Sorry Matt, you're right I probably am not looking hard enough. The
hardware from Tiger direct is too high at 75mm, my requirements are for
a unit less than 75mm. This one may fould the case. Newegg is a new
website to me and didn't figure in my original search results from
Google. Thanks for the info though.

Hi Matt

My solution would be to use a Thernalright ALX-800 heatsink, with a
SilenX 80mm thermistor fan attached. The heatsink is 40mm high, the
fan is 25mm high, making the total 65mm. The decibel rating of the
fan is a mere 11.8 to 14.4 db, making it an ideal solution. The
Thermalright is a superb heatsink, and the fan gives 18-28cfm, which
should be plenty for your 2800+ CPU.

I can supply both these parts if you're interested - prices on request
(too late to figure out right now!). Shouldn't have issues with the
heatsink fitting - it's cleverly desgned so that it should clear any
nearby capacitors before it lengthens out.

Unfortunately not quite enough space for the Arctic Cooling Copper
Silent 2 TC which comes in at 78mm, the Coolermaster Vortex Dream 7
is 55mm but is 21db (your original choice?).

Hope this helps.
Paul
