Cooling options for hard drive

T

I just installed a Seagate 300GB ATA hard drive, it seems to run hotter
then the Western Digital 200GB it replaced.
Looking for cooling options?
The drive sits in a 3.5 bay, near the bottom of the case.

Yeah, Seagates do tend to run hotter.

One thing that makes a big difference is whether
there is a free slot adjacent to the drive.

If you have that already, a fan at the front
of the case should help dramatically.

I prefer the free slot approach myself, just because its quieter.
But then I avoid Seagates because they do tend to run hotter too.

That depends on a type of your case. Are there any sufficient ventillation
holes close to the drive?
Does your case have a large (120mm) exhaust fan at the back? If not, think
about installing it.

Depends on the case. There are some solutions you can install in
a 3.5" bay, if a slot underneath the HDD is free. Basically
everything that blosw air on the HDD helps. If that air comes
from the outside of the case, it helps more.

do you think with 2 hds - samsungs (i know your a fan)
they would be ok without a fan ie. passive cooling ,
just by being vertical with at HD space between them ?

they are ide 5400 jobs the ones they made for home pvr setup

seem only slightly warm to the touch as i've turned the fan off which
was directly in front of them as an experment
and to save some fan noise !

its downloading say half of the time

Yes, I run that config myself in one of my PCs, except
with both drives horizontal in a normal midi tower case.

I dont even bother with case covers in most of my PCs and
the room temp does get up a bit in the hottest of summer,
basically because I prefer it quite warm. I dont normally
turn the cooler on till the room temp gets over 31C and
sometimes not till it gets over 32C. The drive temps are fine.

That would be even better, mine are the 7200 rpm drives.

Yeah, thats the main reason I operate like that, I like quiet
systems. I went out of my way to get quiet drives and very
quiet power supplys too. And I dont bother with covers, so
you dont even get the noise damping that covers provide.

My PVR isnt quite that much, only about 6 hours a day most days at most.
