converting to ntfs

I understand that I can convert an existing XP partition
to ntfs without fear of losing stuff in the process. But
I have read elsewhere that to do this correctly is a more
involved process than merely running the convert command.

I always keep important stuff on removable media to
minimize loss if and when something weird/bad happens, but
there is some sort of file that I am told I need to create
BEFORE running the convert command.

I'm eager to try the new technology file system and the
EFS and only went with fat32 because I am running a dual
boot with w98 on another partition -- wanted to keep it
symetrical, for no real reason...

No, it is a simple command, type "convert /?" at a command prompt for help, and no matter what you have read or heard, ALWAYS have
fear of loosing your "stuff". The only thing you need to create before hand is a backup.

I have the same setup, and security isn't an issue. I keep both partitions
formatted FAT32 because Windows 98 can't read NTFS. I use Windows Explorer
often to copy files from one partition to the other. If I had the Windows
XP partition formatted NTFS, Windows Explorer wouldn't be able to see it, if
I were using Windows 98.

Hi and thanks.

I can't find it right now, but a Microsoft article I read
talked about a number of switches to use with
the "covnert" command, one of which created some sort of
temporary holding file (for settings, maybe..?).

I couldn't agree more. Before taking any step like this one,
affecting your entire drive, you should always be sure to have a
backup of anything you can't afford to lose. No matter how
unlikely, it's possible for something to go wrong. A power glitch
in the middle of conversion, for example, might leave you with no
usable drive at all.
