I am hoping to convert my system from Windows 98 to XP.
Can anyone offer me some advise before I start?
I am sure many of you have done this already.
I am trying to getting everything ready before I start.

Thanks,Lee

Take a few minutes to scan the newsgroup. There are tons of postings
and answers on this topic.

Hilary was helping the OP to realize that he/she should have done some
reading first before sending in the request. I can wholeheartedly support
Hilary's stance. There are well over 1000 posts in this forum each and
every day. Do you know some students ask questions and use the answers here
to do their assignment/homework for them?

Great answer..........this person is asking for assistance, not a tour
guide.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

In the time it took him/her to post their question and look back they
could easily have gotten all the answers they needed. There is more
than one way to provide help and assistance to someone. Spoon feeding
isn't the only way.

1. Check that the hardware is adequate. Have at least a 400 MHz
processor and *more* than the recommended 128 MB RAM, or the performance
will not be good enough to be worth it. Also about 4GB free hard disk
space.

2. Read Gary Woodruff`s article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

3. Run the CD from your System and tell it to check for any issues. If
there are any decide what to do before proceeding.

You will need to uninstall (not merely disable) Anti virus; system
utilities like Norton; and CD burning software - get XP compatible
stuff after.

4. Once installed make sure the Firewall is enabled before going on the
net even for a moment - in Control Panel - Network Connections, r-click
the connection you use and in Properties - Advanced check it in the top
box. Otherwise you will be hit by Blast and its friends within a minute
or two

Some tips:
1. Backup ALL Data e.g Documents, email, favourites etc.
If possible move them to another partition or another folder
instead of inside the C:\Windows folder in 98. I have mine on D:
drive. Do NOT use the backup program supplied with 98 (you will
not be able to restore it in XP, use the third party backup program).

2. Always run the Upgrade Advisor supplied on the Windows XP
disk or the compatibility check. This will check if hardware or
software on your system is compatible.

3. Make sure your system is virus free. Update your virus software
if necessary.

4. Make sure your hardware is compatible. Older printers and scanners
may not work under Windows XP.
