Converting document from Word 2000 to 2003

When I am emailed a document (2000) and I open it in 2003, the bullets are
replaced with a psy sign and " 's " is being replaced by an " = " sign.
Anyone have that problem? How can I stop this? I have forms sent to me from
another office and I am unable to print them properly.
 
The usual reason for this is a missing font, often because the document was
originally created in WordPerfect and certain characters (notably quotation
marks and dashes) were inserted in the WP Typographic Symbols font.
