I tried to open a file from an older version of Word in 2003 and got a
message that a converter was needed. It seemed to install ok, but when the
file opened all I got was a page of tiny squares.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?R2VsZmxpbmc4Mw==?=,
I tried to open a file from an older version of Word in 2003 and got a

file opened all I got was a page of tiny squares.
The document was probably damaged. Can the original version of Word still open
the file correctly?

Yes. It was on an old floppy disk and I was able to open the file on my old
computer -- running Windows 98 and Word 2000. However, I couldn't open it on
my regular PC which is running Win XP and Office 2000, nor could I open it on
another computer running XP and Office 2003.

Use Windows Explorer to copy the file to the hard drive and open it from
there.
