convert Word 97 files to Word 2007 files

How can Word 97 data files be converted directly for use as Word 2007 files
without an intermediate conversion to Word 2003?

You should be able to open Word 97 files directly in Word 2007, if that's
what you're asking. Word 97 and Word 2003 use the same file format.
