Yes, you at least need version 8.
If it's a data-recovery issue then you could also try BartPE, Knoppix or
Ubuntu LiveCD to get the data copied off. That won't provide you with a
bootable FAT32 copy of the OS though, at least not without further work. But
it will usually get your data back.
The more data-recoveries I do, the more I think it's better to use a FAT32
partition for the OS, and if it's a big disk then a separate NTFS partition
for data. NTFS is more robust as a data-store but if there are bootup
problems it's extremely hard to repair the bootloader without doing a full
reinstall.
