convert field codes to text in table of contents

Help says ctrl+shift+f9 will convert field codes to plain text. This works in
my index, but in my table of contents, it converts the entries to hyperlinks.
How can I convert my table of contents to plain text?

It *is* plain text. The entries aren't hyperlinks; they just have the
Hyperlink character style. As long as the TOC is a field, the style does not
display even though the TOC entries are hyperlinked. When you unlink the
field, the Hyperlink style surfaces. Select the whole TOC and press
Ctrl+Spacebar to remove it.
