Convert existing word docs to new template

I need to convert existing word docs into a set layout which I have
created. Preferably using some sort of tool or code (even if I have to
create the tool myself), I have been pointed in the direction of using
Macro's and Visual Basic Editor. My questions are as follows......

1. Is it possible?

2. Where do I start?!?

The idea is to cut down on manually re-formatting docs. I realise this
is not necessarily a word specific question but as you may have
gathered I have no idea where to start, any help would be massively
appreciated.

Save the document as a template.
Create new documents from the template.

If your varied existing documents use the same style names with
different formattings, you can use the Organizer to replace them with
the set you want to use for all of them.
