convert AM/PM time to 24 hour time

A spreadsheet I have sent to me daily contains the begin and stop times as AM and PM in separate columns. I need to figure the difference in the times (elapsed time). My first thought is to change all the times to 24 hour time and use a simple subtract formula, but I don't know how to change them to this formate easily.

Is it possible to find the differences in the times in the current am/pm formats? What happens if the length of time extends past the midnight hour?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Just change the format to hh:mm as opposed to hh:mm AM/PM,
you could also change the regional time setting that way excel
will follow that setting
