I have opened an old word file only to find that it is unreadable. How do I convert it back to its original - readable - form?

Which old version of Word?

You can try, with Word open.
File > Open

Change the file type to "Recover text from any file"

Try opening your document. If it opens, at all, save it to a new name. It
will have a lot of clutter that you'll have to clean up.

Before quitting Word, go back to the FileOpen dialog and change the file
type back to Word documents.

Using open text from any file (which is one of the choices for file type on
the File Open dialog) will give you a lot of gibberish. It is just (often)
better than nothing.
