Hi,

I subscribe to a mailing list and I don't like the way Outlook 2003
groups the messages in Conversation view. I would like it to collapse
all the threads, but it insists on expanding threads that have not been
read, I don't want it to do that. I would like it to behave like it did
in Outlook XP and Outlook 2000. Is there a setting somewhere to turn
this off?

Thanks,
Mark.

Go to View | Arrange By and change the grouping to something else.

I want to view them grouped by conversation but not expanded. Any way to
do that?

You can try going into the Customize Current View dialog, clicking the Group
By button and choosing "All collapsed" in the Expand/Collapse Defaults
box...but I'm not sure it works the same way for this particular view as it
does in other grouped views.

Thanks - that doesn't work either - the threads do not get collapsed
even when I tell it to collapse them. Why did Microsoft change this? It
is SO infuriating! I'm even thinking of uninstalling Outlook 2003 and
putting Outlook XP back on because of this. I want to view my email list
messages in a newsgroup style layout, but there appears to be no way of
doing this now, but there was in previous versions.

Why, why, why?

I cannot answer the 'why' part, but to collapse those groups that have unread messages in them do the following:

Click on the View menu
Slect the Expand/collapse groups item
Uncheck 'Allways show Unread and flagged messages'

And that should do it for you.
