Why when i go to Control Panel that the Folders automatically display on the
left side of the window. Sure i can eliminate them by depressing the Folders
button above the address but that is not the point. I do not like that.

I would like to know how i can return to the original setup whereby only the
Control Panel options were seen on the left side of the window whenever i
went to Control Panel.

I have win xp pro with all updates.

You are so right. What an annoyance it is.
Do you see the rectangle on the left that says:
"Control Panel / Switch ot Classic View"
That will do it.

Another neat thing you can do is to right-click on the Start button
Select Properties
Start Menu tab
Customize button
Advanced tab
Scroll to "Control Panel - Display as a menu" and tick it.

A very helpful book: Windows XP: the Missing Manual, by David Pogue, of the
New York Times

Thanks for yr information. By the way, i do not see any rectangle on the
left; what i see on the left is what i have on my hard drive, ie all
folders.

To view the Control Panel as i want, i have to switch to the Classic Start
Menu ( start, properties, classic start menu ) and only then do i see the
rectangles on the left with such choices as Swhitch to Classic View,
etc....
