control panel page as a shortcut ?

K

KK

Hello,

I use the control panel page 'change display settings' quite frequently to
switch between my laptop and external monitor. I have no problems, it works
fine, but can I put a shortcut to the page on the desktop or taskbar ?

Thanks

KK

Hi KK,

You know you can right-click the desktop and click on Personalise, Display
Settings, right? You don't *have* to go via Control Panel, to get to that
Display Settings dialogue box.

But, if you really want a shortcut ... well it is a bit tricky, because the
Display Settings dialogue is part of Windows itself, it's not a separate
program that you run, like Notepad or Internet Explorer (for example). But
the following Command line will open Display Settings:

C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
desk.cpl,Settings,@Settings

You must use the command exactly as it appears, it is case-sensitive. So you
can right-click on Desktop, choose New, Shortcut, and use the above command
line as the target for the shortcut, This will launch the Display Settings -
I just tried it here and it works on my machine.

Hope this helps!

Just send a copy of desk.cpl to your desktop (location =
C:\Windows\System32\desk.cpl)

Then run the shortcut.

You can drag and drop a shortcut of any control panel item with right click
and drag.

What the O/P wants is not a control panel item. It is a sub item that is
called after you load desktop/personalize.

if you use "change display settings" frequently, you'll find it in history
located on the left panel in Control Panel.
You can also type "display" in the Control Panel's search box :)

Doh! Yes, you're right: "C:\Windows\System32\desk.cpl" will also work.

I'd forgotten about that. I'm such a moron!

No, I'm correct. I regret it's you who is wrong.

Did you try this, before you posted? The Original Poster wants a shortcut
to the Display Settings dialogue box. You say "just click start and drag it
to the desktop"; but "it" - Display Settings - does not exist in the Start
menu. There is nothing to be dragged and dropped. One can create a shortcut
to the Personalise applet in Control Panel, by dragging and dropping to the
Desktop. No problem - except, that's not what the OP wanted (and doesn't
solve their problem).

As described by Richard Urban, you can create a shortcut to
C:\Windows\System32\desk.cpl. That works. I proposed a slightly more
cumbersome, but also correct solution:, a shortcut to
"C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
desk.cpl,Settings,@Settings".

I guess you're trying to maintain a high standard of technical accuracy in
the newsgroup, and that's good. Unfortunately in doing so, you've polluted
it with even more low quality, off-target, erroneous information. You'll
probably want to check your facts in future, before telling other posters
they're wrong. But keep looking for accuracy - that's good.

Cheers,
