Control Panel Not Responding

XP with SP1. I can open Control Panel, but any attempt to access a Control
Panel item results in the message Control Panel Not Responding and I have to
end task. This might have occurred after an update, but I don't know which
one. I can access the CPL files directly (at least all those that I expect
to operate like that, such as Main or Mouse or DateTime) but not through CP
_unless_ I change it to 'classic' view - then it operates OK.

Any ideas for restoring CP functionality in standard view gratefully
received.

Thank you for the response. The system has been thoroughly scanned with all
the standard tools, include an on-line scanner, and there is nothing
suspicious identified. The site you referenced provides a tool for switching
between classic and standard views, which I have already done in order to be
able to use Control Panel. I now need to know what I should do to be able
to use standard view again without creating the Not Responding error.

I just had to fix that niggle on one of my kids's pcs. All I had to do
was get rid of
the 10 backdoor programs and 5 viruses. The kid goes to Xbox crack/code
sites all the time and seems to get the latest and newest nasties.

Do they play Live, Ed? The boys could exchange, if so.

These boys are running 7 and 8 eight hour Halo tournaments here.(

Adaware and Spybot have been updated and run, as well as AVG. No effect.
(They were actually already up to date before I started trying to solve the
problem, and running them all again was the first thing I did). I have also
run the Housecall on-line scan which didn't detect anything (although I'm
not sure I trust the on-line scanners).

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. As per:
(although I'm not sure I trust the on-line scanners).

They tell you enough to get you where you need to be. Leave the reports
open and manually follow the paths via the registry. In most cases, this
will solve many issues rather quickly that some haven't even caught yet.

As per your issue, I would suggest from here running the edit on line 256:

Good luck and keep us posted.

Oddly, I've unwillingly become an expert on Halo. I even read the darn
paperback book. #1 son tho is on a two week timeout from the Internet
for not doing his home chores.

1. Never touched the stuff.) Will give Wolfenstein a go though, from
my PC days.
2. Good for you! Isn't parenting great?

Side note: My cockatiel has the Gregorian Chant down from all of this. <w>

I was a DukeNukem fan for a long time. 2D then 3D. It took a whole year
for me to figure out how to get to the sub on my own.

OK by me. I hardly have any rules I just dont want to be stuck washing
their dishes or their friends dishes. I'm not a party cleaner/maid nor
do I expect my wife to be either.

Both kids are into punk. Needless to say they may not have had a choice
in the matter.

Finches are fun. Get a male and a female. Get one of those nests and
then put some grass clippings and cotton in the cage. The femail picks
out what she wants, and hands it to the male who builds the nest. Then
they both sleep together in the nest. Real cute.

Of course, guess what they do first thing in the morning before they
even eat :)

I've fixed it. The problem was a corrupted CONTROL.INI. I had checked it,
but I didn't think to scroll down several pages - the garbage was preceded
by many blank lines. It was only when I realised that the file was much
larger than it needed to be that I checked whether there wasn't more in the
file than I was seeing. Deleting everything after the last valid line solved
it.

I don't believe it's possible at this stage to identify why it got
corrupted.

Sounds fair to me. Same rules here and heck even the 6 yr old knows how to
load the detergent and turn on the dishwasher and he loves to Swifter the
ceramic floors in the kitchen.

Ah...telling on yourself a bit? Is ok, am a young hippy still at heart.
)

The eight older regulars vary: One is a tattoo artist, the other a piercer
(body), one is a musician that plays at Tipatino's in New Orleans, one air
brushes commercially, my oldest son competes in pop-lock battles (Techno) in
New Orleans, one is a mechanic, three work fast food (still in school), the
younger ones and extra's (six) all play sports, Halo, Computers and they ALL
listen to loud music. The six year old sings D12 and dances like Usher.
Interesting bunch!)

Too cute. Will see about getting a pair. <w>

Interestingly, since our dishwasher broke it's actually taking less time
to do the dishes the old school way. I'm going to fill that spot in the
kitchen with an ice cream/TV dinner freezer :)
