Control Panel gone, Explorer gone?

Hi all ~

don't know what I have done to get here, but may be related to cleaning some
infected files with Norton:

Clicking on Control Panel (via Start menu) just results in some disk
activity and that's it - nothing else. Same trying to invoke Explorer via
rightclick on Start
button....

Any good ideas somebody?

Norton is infected.

Right clicking the Start button opens a Start Menu folder.

If you want to open Windows Explorer, type: explorer in Start | Run and
click OK.

See if the Control Panel opens if you type: control in Start | Run and
click OK.

That I can believe - just saw tons error messages fro Norton AV in the
logs. None of your two suggestions works BTW...

explorer is explorer.exe it should open Windows Explorer.

control is control.exe it should open the Control Panel.

You're probably still infected with something.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.
