control panel failure

When I double click on the "add new hardware"
and "add/delete programs" icons in the control panel,
nothing happens. How do I fix this?

It will take a few seconds while the system populates the list.

Hi Art

Thanks for your response. You're right of course and i'm
familiar with the functions. However, ever since I
loaded the upgrade for XP Professional, the "add/remove
program" icon does not function at all. When I double
click on it, the mouse pointer will show an hourglass,
the "add/remove program" wizard window will SEEM to open,
but then it disappears again. This also applies to the
other functions in the control panel where a "wizard"
window is activated.

Any ideas?
