I wanted to know if it is possible in Excel to somehow
show the content/breakdown of a cell when it is linked to
another worksheet within the file. Example: I have a
linked cell that has a formula to bring mortgage values
from a "debt" worksheet. I would like to click on that
total cell and see what names and values make up that
total. Is this possible?

One way is to use:
Tools >> Auditing >> Trace precedents

For details look in Excel's "Help" under "Locate cells in another worksheet
or workbook that provide data to a formula"

(I have Excel 97.)
