I tried upgrading a VLK copy of Windows SP2 to an OEM SP2 version on a test
machine. It activated OK and everything worked perfectly.
Brimming with confidence I then attempted the same thing on my main machine
and of course it all went horribly wrong!
The setup completed successfully and on rebooting and trying to start
Windows for the first time it got stuck in a reboot loop. No BSOD. It now
just gets to the black Windows XP logo screen and then restarts. Safe Mode
won't work either.
The two machines are quite similar except that the problem machine has a
SATA drive. RAID and AHCI are disabled in the BIOS of the motherboard (Intel
D915PBL). The SATA drive is a Western Digital model.
As far as I can see, I don't need to load any drivers via F6 as the drive is
detected OK. The drivers on Intel's website seem to be just for RAID. I did
actually try loading them anyway just to see what happened but just got the
BSOD.
There seems to be a lot of installation/repair problems with SATA drives in
the Newsgroups but I can't find a working fix.
Any ideas please?
