I have a file that loads at startup called CIVSC.EXE this
file is a thief. It takes all of my memory. So after
startup I do ctrl alt delete and endtask the the file.
Once this is done all is well. How can I get rid of the
offending file?

Hi Ron,
civsc.exe is indexing service and as you found out it is
a resource hog and you don't need it you can shut this
service off through Admin tools>services, while your
their here is a link that discribes all of your
background services,and if you should shut them off or
not.

I'm pretty sure this is a bug. Have you run a virus scan? If so and nothing
showed, go to www.google.com and do a search. You may find some help there.

It is not part of the system if you have given the right name. You may
have mistyped for cisvc which is the context indexer another reply
refers to. It *is* civsc then it will be some nasty trying to pretend
that it is the valid component. (And although cisvc does do a lot of
disk activity it ought only to do so when nothing else is going on).

So first Start - Run and run MSConfig.exe
See if a line for it is present in the Startup page or the Services one,
and click to uncheck the line.

Then make sure you have up-to-date definitions for your antivirus and
reboot to run that, and get anti-spyware like AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com and run that
