Content.IE5 and subfolders not visible in Temporary Internet Files

G

Guest

A virus scan with Norton Antivirus revealed three adware threats that were
not deleted by the normal 'fix it' button. Norton suggested that I navigate
to the address given and delete the file manually. I successfully did this
for two pathways (two other users of the PC), navigating to the required
subdirectories of Content.IE5 for each user. However, when I try to repeat
the exercise for my own Temporary Internet Files I am unable to see any of
the subdirectories of that directory.

I have checked all possible boxes in the file folder options (hidden
folders, system files, etc) but to no avail. I have administrator access.

You do not have to *see* the Content.IE5 folder to delete its contents.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Also: Start IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Days to keep
pages in history: 0 | Apply | OK.
------

Smoke and mirrors.

If you do want to to see Content.IE5...

Obviously Your Name Here needs to be changed to the appropriate name.

Content.MSO is created by an MS Office program.

To view:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
General tab | Settings button | View Files button

To view:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 AND \Content.MSO

Start | Run | Type: cleanmgr | OK | Highlight Temporary Internet Files |
View Files button

Or...

Start | Run | Type: %tmp% | OK |

You will probably have to click the Folders button on the Tool Bar.
Click: [+] Temporary Internet Files
Click: [+] Content.IE5
Click: Random named folders
View
You can also view Content.MSO

Or Paste into the Start | Run box.
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

Note: Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) will *not* clean:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

I don't know why you can view the Content.IE5 folder with Disk Cleanup but
it won't clean the folder.

Wesley,

Thank-you for your amazingly quick reply. I have used the Start | Settings
| Control Panel | Internet Options, delete procedure. Presumably to good
effect, because the Norton adware threat messages have now gone away.

This still doesn't explain why I can see the Content.IE5 folders of the
four other users of this PC but not my own. Your suggested procedures for
viewing the Content.IE5 folder in my own pathway do not work. None of the
pathways for the other users show the Cointent.MSO folder that you refer to.

It would be nice to see with my own eyes what is or is not deleted, though I
understand why Microsoft wouldwant to keep my itchy fingers off the wrong
keys!

Lawrence,

Replace Your Name Here with your name and...
Paste the following into the Start | Run box:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

Make sure that the path is not wrapped or it does not all get copied.

Cointent.MSO folder will not exist if no MS Office programs are installed on
your machine.

Content.IE5 folder contains randomed named folders, i.e. 2RYVIFMJ, YD4LOL4H,
etc.

After using Delete all offline content, the Content.IE5 folder has
desktop.ini & index.dat left in it.

Thanks for the advice. I can now see my Content.IE5 folder. The absence of
the Content.MSO sub-directory puzzles me though, as we have Microsoft Office
installed and use both Wordand Excel very frequently.

Lawrence,

I certainly wouldn't worry about it. I know that in Word if you don't
access the internet, the Content.MSO folder doesn't get recreated. I don't
know what the exact parameters are for the Content.MSO folder. I just know
that mine gets deleted every day. It doesn't have a desktop.ini file in it
to protect it.
