Content Advisor not advising...

Set it up two months ago. It is enabled and has the most
restrictive settings. Worked as advertised..for a
while. Now it does not work. Every site can be accessed
with nary a peep from the advisor.

Any ideas? Has CA been circumvented? Where to look?

TIA

Thanks Henri,

No go. I did the registry fix and it did reset the password, but CA is still allowing all sites to load including those expressly set to "never" in the allow list.

Yes, there are other users. Two children. I would be more than suprised if they had the chops to circumvent CA (by using for example the fix detailed in your second link).

I have:
deleted history
deleted cookies
searched for ratings.pol - this being an XP machine, there is no such beast. (I made sure I could view hidden files)

I went to the ICRA web site and installed the latest policy from that site. Went through their troubleshooting guide and tests. Their suggestion for nonfunctioning CA in IE using XP is to contact Microsoft. Lovely.

Hi JD - This is my standard post on CA. I believe that you've already tried
the password fix, but look at the restore function, below.

Content Advisor - Go here:
http://www.pchell.com/support/contentadvisor.shtml and do what it says
and/or see here to disable it completely or toggle it:
http://osiris.978.org/~brianr/nopics-ie/

Here's the basic procedure, but refer to the link above if you need more
detail: Go to Start|Run and then enter "regedit" (without the quotes). and
then navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Ratings

Select the "Key" entry in the right-hand pane and
Delete it. Now go to Registry|Exit to close Regedit.

Now you'll be able to disable Content Advisor by opening IE6 and going to
Tools|Internet Options|Content. Click on "Disable". Then click on "OK" when
you're asked for a password - don't enter anything. OK out and CA is
disabled.

Alternatively, see here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm under
Content Advisor under "C" for info and specialized .vbs scripts to turn it
on and off and to modify specific settings.

If you wish to restore Content Advisor to its original condition (because of
your kids) you can obtain a Microsoft program (CA-Reset.exe - 89.5K) to do
this here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/CA-Reset.exe
(listed on line 283) NOTE: Using CA-Reset will completely delete your
Approved List - everything starts like brand new, so consider this before
you use it.

Thanks Jim for the links. I just completed resetting the
CA with the reset .exe program. Now CA is acting as
advertised.

By the way, the link to Kellys-Korner was worth all the
hassle of CA not working. Thanks for bringing it up.

JD.

YW, JD - Glad you got it straightened out. Kelly's site is a storehouse of
tweaks and fixes that we all use and recommend. Do some exploring! (Since
I don't maintain a separate web site, Kelly graciously posts some of my
"fix" files (like Microsoft's CAReset) so that I can refer people to them.)
Her site is Hightly Recommended by all who know it. :)
