contacts vs email address

Greetings,

I needed to move my outlook (2003) from my old computer to a new one.
I exported both the mail
and contact folders to the new machine and all seems well EXCEPT:

When I create a new email and click the To button only some of my
contacts appear in the list. Yet
when I go to Contacts I see all of my contacts. For instance I have a
contact for Joe Smith but when
I click the To button in a new email Joe Smith does not appear. Also
If I just type in the name Joe Smith
Outlook does not fill in the address.

Sorry if this is a basic questions but I can not figure out how to fix
this. Any information would be
greatly appreciated. I don't even know how to ask this question on a
google search.

Thank you,

Ted Potter

Assuming you're using personal folder (PST), you didn't have to export
anything. Copy the PST file from old to new PC, then use Outlook to open it.

When you click To button, what shows under "Show Names from the" drop down
box? Click the drop down box and select Contacts under Outlook Address Book
Also
If I just type in the name Joe Smith
Outlook does not fill in the address.

Also, click Tools - Options - Email options - Advanced email options -
Automatic name checking (checked)
and Suggest names while completing To, Cc, Bcc fields (checked)

Thank you, I will check that. I however misspoke - it is not the To
button I press in a new email
but the "address book" icon next to it. When I do that I get a list of
some of my contacts but not
all of them. Sorry for the confusion, my bad.

Thanks again !

It's the same thing. My guess is you have multiple address books and it's
pointing at the wrong one. So, take a look under "Show names from the:"...
Drop the selection box down. What's listed there? If I'm right, there should
be multiple "Contacts" entry.

Your problem has been caused by using Import/Export for the data file, which
as posted daily is not the way to deal with the native OL data file.
