contacts in subfolders don't autocomplete

How do you get contacts in subfolders (i.e. a folder created under the main
Contact folder) to work with the CTRL+K name check in a new mail message?

A contact that is listed in my main contact list, I can type in the first
name of in the To: field of a new message, hit CTRL+K, and it will autofill
in the name and underline it indictating an email match. However, if I try
to do this with a contact out of one of the subfolder contact lists it
doesn't work and I get promoted to find the name manually. I've found that
if I drag the contact out into the main contacts folder, then back into the
subfolder it will work. But if the contact has been created in the subfolder
it doesn't. How do I get the subfolders to be included in that shortcut name
lookup?

I'm running Outlook 2003 in cached Exchange servermode. I've done the
registry hack to force Outlook to use the GAL instead of the offline address
book for name lookups. (The result was the same before the registry hack.)

is the contacts folder enabled as an address book? right click on it and
choose properties - look on the address book tab.

open the address book and look on it's tools, options menu - is the
subfolder on the search list at the bottom of the screen?

note- if a match is found in a contacts folder higher on the list outlook
stops looking.

By the way, that's autoresolution, not autocompletion.
