Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to have a setup where
a computer on a remote network (a friend's PC) could be
on my "LAN" at all times. We both are on cable internet
with static IPs.

I played around a bit with RRAS but I am not sure if that
is the best method.

I am currently running a network with 2x WinXP Pro and 1x
Win2k Pro. I also have an NFR copy of win2k server if
that is the path I would have to take. I would really
appreciate any help.

Thanks!!

If you are using a PPTP vpn from the desktop, then this
will only remain active until you either shut down or log
off on one of the machines.

If you want the VPN to remain on even after log off, then
I think you would need to have a vpn compatible router at
either end and set up a LAN to LAN vpn between the routers
(ipsec tunnel) - this way, the routers are doing the
authentication and not relying on the pc being logged on
to perform it.

I hope I've understood your situation correctly.

You understood me perfectly :)

I would want to do the PPTP from the desktop option as we
don't have nice hardware to do the other option.

Would you be able to walk me through how I could set up
the first option or point me to a website/tutorial that I
can use.

Thanks again!
