constant rebooting

aungzay

I've setup a Windows 2000 Professional on a harddrive using
a computer that has a 400 MHz Intel CPU. Everything wok
fine until I install the hard drive on a system that has
an Award Bios dated 1998 on a motherboard 5I-TX1 using AMD
K6 CPU. The system keeps rebooting just before the system
get ready to show the sign-in script. I tried using the
sfae mode as well as the safe mode to go to DOS prompt. It
will keep rebooting.
Please help.

Thank you.

You should install the operating system on the computer you intend to use it on. I
have had luck doing what you did in some cases and in other cases it showed the same
behavior that you are experiencing. You might try an upgrade install by booting from
the cdrom which would at least preserve your applications but require you reinstall
first the service pack and then critical updates. See the link below for more

Someone else has replied that you should install on the system you
will be using the drive on. This is valid to a point. Moving 2000
Pro from one hardware make-up to another used to be a nightmare till
Service Pack 4 where Microsoft finally made Win2000 Pro fully Plug and
Play and Re-Detect !! Thus if you put Service Pack 4 Windows 2000 Pro
just boots up redetecting everything properly.

That said, you should not run Win2000 on an AMD K6 as I would be very
surprised if that processor is on the approved list of CPUs for
Win2000. Even if it is, there ARE issues with K6 based system and
Win2000 which are to do, often, with the motherboard, graphics card,
etc...

Don't bother is my advice.

Mik
