Constant hardrive activity

Hi

All of the sudden my hard drives (raid) just keep running. Using
Sysinternals filemon all the activity is coming from the C:\System
Volume Information folder. I ended the cisvc.exe process and all is
well except the cisvc.exe process needs to run!

Any ideas what's going on?

Thanks, but I'd rather keep the indexing service running. My problem
is that the hard drives keep "grinding" 24 hrs a day, the only time
they stop is when I'm using it. If I try to shut down in "standby" I
can here the drives stop, then they spin right back up again.
I've been using this machine for a long time now and this just
recently started,

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Dave

What's the fragmentation condition of the disk? - Even with Indexing
and System Restore the drive shouldn't exhibit the level of activity you
describe.

Does it stop when you cease indexing service?
If it does, then indexing is what is happening.
If it does not, then it is something else.

Dave,

Take a look at FileMon from SysInternals
(http://urlx.org/microsoft.com/d7f78) and see if it sheds some light on
what may be happening. It should show you, in real time, any file
system activity. You can also determine which process is accessing the
file system.

Hi

I did defrag the drives and actually they wern't in bad shape.

I stopped the indexing service, took forever to go thru all the files,
but still didn't fix the problem.

I have been using filemon for a long time.
From a clean boot, watching filemon, the cisvc.exe service went thru
all the files and seem to get stuck in the c:\system volume
information\catalog wci folder. Most of the activity was on a file
that was not in that folder, but the request varied from WRITE, FLUSH,
DELETE, SET INFORMATION, OPEN, CREATE. I can end the cisvc.exe process
and all is normal.

Any ideas....
Thanks

Dave
