Am expieriencing random and constant black screens with vista, anyone else
having this problem? It never gives error messages, etc, just the screen
goes completely black for no apparent reason, does this alot, and always
sporatically. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Does the screen stay black or does it come back? Does the system still
respond?

Nope, it stays gone, I can still see the mouse cursor, hd lights, etc still
going, and it sporatically moves around, Im totally lost as to why, I tried
uninstalling different programs, drivers, etc. And it still does it, and
always randomly, so can't find a cause. And no errors reported in error
reporting.Thanx

Just a guess but it may have something to do with uac and glass. Does it
happen when you do something that might trigger uac? Have you changed any
settings to do with uac? Are you using Aero Glass?

Tried turning uac on and off, does the same thing regardless. It's not
hardware i dont think, as everything ran flawlessly on xp. I tried vista with
only its default built in drivers for everything, still the same thing, then
downloaded teh vista ati, x-fi drivers, etc..still same thing. And still
happens with no new software installed after installation. So I'm at a total
loss here. It happens both when pc is idle, and when it's busy doing
things, and I don't notice any weird cpu spikes or anything before it does the
black screen of death. Using aero glass too yes. Also, my parts are:

ATI x1800xl
Soundblaster X-Fi platinum
Asus a8ve-deluxe mobo
1gig of infinium ram
1gig of ocz ram
diamond multimedia tv-tuner

Daniel:
It sounds like a driver issue but you've changed drivers. Things
that are easily overlooked are power supply voltages, CPU overheating or
ram. "http://www.memtest86.com/" works or thoroughly testing ram and it's
available as an CD image so you don't need a floppy drive. Vista as well as
Windows x64 use ram differently than XP, which means that a flaw may not
show up when using XP.

Did memtest. Nope, reported no errors at all, did another fresh vista
ultimate rtm install, didn't install anything at all, no drivers, no
software, etc. And it STILL does the random black screen of deaths.

Yup, all power-saving, sleep, hibernation, etc is turned off, same problems
happening.

Just a thought, but do check the physical connections. Are the cables
seated and attached firmly? Graphics card seated correctly? Power leads?

Yup, I've checked every connection, tried a different powersupply, you name
it, I've tried it, still the same problem. I did notice one thing however
upon initial installation when t does the auto updates. It detects something
in my pc as nvidia uart midi something or other, but, I have nothing in my pc
or on my mobo that's nvidia, it auto detects whatever it is and installs
those drivers for whatever that it is by itself, so maybe that has something
todo with it? Might be a bug you'll wanna look into. Any other ideas? Thanx

If I resume from Hibernate I have a black screen,
if I can just see the location of the sign in bar that apears to be behind
black glass - I enter my password there everything resumes ok ,
if nothing I hit >Ctrl,Alt,Delete>Cancel and resume as normal

If I have been away and return to a black screen, when I try to resume it
shows very faint indication of open files behind the "black glass " -- again
I hit >Ctrl,Alt,Delete> and the screen returns to normal.

I realse this is not a solution but it help me remove the anoyance factor of
my dreaded black screen

I have the exact same problem with the intermittent black screens. This is
"right out of the box", I set up the computer a week ago and it has always
happened. I read all of the post, but did not really see a solution. I did
not change any of my settings, but I did check the power saving modes and
turned them all off, with no luck. Mine is an HP computer, how about yours.
Maybe its a hardware problem, not a Vista problem

I don't really have a problem so much with intermittent black screens and
staying black...What will happen with my system is that it will go black for
a few seconds and then come back on. I don't have a HP though, I have a
Gateway but if this is the problem you are reffering to then what I did to
fix it was updated my video drivers. I changed my video card to a
PCI-Express card because I wanted more for gaming then what Gateway puts in
there. I would say try updating your video drivers, this may take care of
the problem. This is what everyone has told me to do as far as glitches
like that. I'm sure if you go to HP's site, you can find updates for your
computers hardware. They are constantly changing, and make sure your
Windows Updates are all updated as well....I tell you, they have updates
coming out for Windows Vista like every half hour it feels like
