Connectivity in the middle of forest

Sachin Palewar

Hi everybody,

I am looking to create a Pocket PC software which can be used from
remote places like rural areas and even from middle of forests to send
some data to server. Key issue is to connect to server where there is
no CDMA or GSM network to ride on.

Lets assume that we are ready to spend money in establishing some kind
of our own network, then what are the possibilities? I don't think
wi-fi can be a option due to its limited range or can it be?

Does anybody know of any such solution? What options I have for
connectivity?

This may not be proper forum to raise such questions, but as there are
many experienced guys here, I decided to post in this forum. Please
help me with your suggestions as this is very urgent for me.

Also if you know of any more appropriate forum for this topic, then
please let me know.

Regards,

Think 'satellite comms'. There are many satellite mobile phone devices,
it shouldn't be too hard to use one of these as a modem.

Alternatively, I'm sure there are WinCE devices with such hardware
built in.

Can you tell me some satellite phone vendors and models. Any URL will
be helpful. Also if you know about any winCE based satellite phone then
it will be great.

Please let me know.

Iridium is a common one and I know of a few companies using them as modems,
but Google can surely get you pages of links.

Thanks Chris, I looked info about iridium and other satellite phones.
There seems to be a lot of info about it. But I think we can not go for
this option mainly due to high cost of satellite phones. As we will
need to give phones to every fleet member with PDA.

Someone is telling me that with right kind of antennae, we can deploy
some kind of wi-fi network to cover areas in the range of a few miles.
Some kind of wireless LAN can be setup , with the base-station hooked
on to internet with a fixed line. And all the PDAs in a range of say
3-4 miles using the wi-fi to transfer data.

Do you think this is possible and viable solution?

Thanks again,

With a line-of-sight directional antenna sure. But it'll be really ugly to
actually implement in the field if the stations are at all mobile and trees
tend to block line-of-sight. An RF radio modem might also do the trick, but
you're still probably talking a couple hundred dollars per unit. No call
cost though.
