Connection to localhost

I have a problem connecting to localhost through MSIE in Windows XP Pro. If
I try to go to http://localhost:8080 to access Jakarta Tomcat server which I
have installed, I get a HTTP 500 error. Both netscape and opera work fine. I
also cannot connect directly to my router (192.168.1.1) through MSIE
6.0.2800, again netscape and opera no problems. I can also ping the router.
Occasionally I can get through to the Tomcat server in MSIE by entering the
hostname (ie http://hostname:8080), but also using the loopback address
(127.0.0.1) gives similar problems. This used to work fine, at least a week
again it did. Recently I configued both Outlook Express and Outlook to
read/send mail. Could this have caused my problems? anybody any ideas? this
is a really weird problem!

in IE go to tools / internet options / connections tab / click LAN
settings / and disable (uncheck) auto detect. click ok
now test your http://localhost (make sure your server is on and started)
