connection status

I have a broadband connection and when i look at my connection status under activity it appears that im sending a number of bytes when im not at all sending anything. what seems to be the cause of this and how to solve it.

It could be many things.
Anti virus program automatically updating the definition files.
Your connection renewing the IP address.
Your email program checking for new mail, if you have this enabled.
Any other program that you have configured to automatically check for
updates.
A trojan virus spreading itself to unsuspecting users on the internet.
