I support a 5 computer -- peer-to-peer network for a small accounting
company. The computers are two WINXP Pro, two WINXP Home, and one WIN98 SE.
I had a situation yesterday where one of the WINXP Pro machines could not
connect to one of the WINXP Home machines to access a tax perparation
porogram. I thought with just five machines, the connection limit could be
met but not exceeded. Any ideas why this happened?

The connection limit is not the number of computers connecting, it is the
number of incoming connections. A single computer can generate more than
one connection.

Doug,

The machine denying the connection has just a share on the root of c: and
the other machines connect to it through a drive letter at logon. When this
problem happens again how can I see what the simultaneous connections are?
I looked at my computer, manage, shared folders, sessions and don't think I
saw more than 5 sessions. Is an event logged when this problem occure?

Microsoft has some articles on this. Here is one that may apply to your
situation:
