Ian,
Sorry for not getting back sooner. If you have USB DSL modem, it will
drop. There is really nothing you can do about it.
It will drop frequently as well even if you're using PPPoe (PPP over
ethernet). When I say frequently, you can expect at least a drop or two
every day or so.
In the States there are a few DHCP DSL connections but they are
starting to be few and far between unfortunately. For maximum uptime
you'll need cable internet with a static IP.
I can recall about 3 years ago when people were totally sold on DSL
over Cable. They cited security and download speeds as its main
advantages. Honestly, I don't see it. I'd rather have cable internet
anyday.
I get a download speed of about 500KB (KiloBytes not kilobits) per
second, upload of about 256KB/sec, a static IP that costs me nothing
extra and my router keeps it secure for me (ala my own firewall
configs). Also, it's about 10$ cheaper than the DSL service I did have
--and-- it stays up very well (days at a time). Go figure.
