Connection dialogue box

When I used to run Outlook 2000 on my old Presario (WindowsME) a dialogue
box would pop up and ask me if I wanted to connect to the internet.
But now on my emachines (WindowsXP) running the exact same Outlook 2000, the
box does not come up automatically. I have to initiate it by clicking "My
ISP" or hitting the "Send/Receive" button. I can't find any button that says
to connect when I run the program. Is there a way to get the box so I can
select to connect online or work offline when I start Outlook?

You must provide your mail support mode, mail account type and the
connection type you specified for that account for anyone to answer your
question.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm not sure what I'm doing and I didn't know what
was needed.

I am using Earthlink
And POP3
under TOOLS/ACCOUNTS the listing under the heading of "Type" is:
"mail (default)"

As for mail support mode, I looked under the help index for "mode" and
various combinations of "mail support mode" but I cannot find out what that
means. Sorry. You'll have to tell me where to look for the mode.

No. The connection type is what you set in properties of your mail
account: LAN, Phone Line, or 3rd party dialer.

Line 2 of Help | About returns your mail support mode.

That box is set at 10 minutes and is checked (which I believe is the
default?). It's always been checked and set for 10 min.
But the system still won't call up the connect dialogue box when first
starting Outlook.
(Sorry. I wish I could give you some piece of information that would make
you slap your forehead and say "Do this! Now the problem is fixed."
But I don't know what information that would be.)

Hi SF,

After started Outlook in offline mode, if you click Send/Receive button, would the
dial-up dialog pop up that time? If not, we can check this setting

-- Tools/Accouts/
-- Open the properties pane of your POP3 account, and then switch to
Connection tab
-- Set the connection type to LAN, leave the other boxes unchecked

Restart Outlook again. On the first start, Outlook performs a Send/Receive action
automatically. So if it is offline that mode, a dial-up dialog will be prompted (if
you have configured one in network connections).

HI, Pat!

I have tried all three options in the POP3 account Connection tab and then
clicked Send/Receive. Here are the results:

Lan = no connect dialogue. Error message in Send/Rcv window says "Failed to
connect to server".
Phone = Connect Dialogue comes up properly. I click connect and mail gets
read okay.
3rd Party = no connect dialogue. Error message in Send/Rcv window says
"Failed to connect to server".

Now, in Control Panel under Network Connections, I have two icons.
1. My ISP (which is working okay. It says connected now.)
2. Local Area Connection
NEtwork cable unplugged
Intel(R) PRo/100 VE NEtwork
(this icon has a red X over it)

Hi SF,

Does that mean the problem is solved if we use "Phone" conection option?

In the Network Connections panel, if you do not have a local LAN connection (you
need a network adapter and it is online), then the local connection icon will have a
red X over it. This is a normal behavior.

If you have any further question regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.

First of all, I'd like to thank you, Pat, for sticking with me all this
time.
If I use the "Phone" connection, the connect dialogue doesn't come up
automatically, but I can bring it up by clicking Send/Receive.
This is a fine compromise with me. The end result is the same (I get
connected) and it's just one extra click. I can live with this.

In Outlook 2000 IMO, if you have Outlook set to check mail every xx minutes,
that will force automatic dial up. To get it to connect when OL first starts
up, however, you have to set the connection type for a LAN connection, not a
phone line connection (even though you are using a phone line connection).
