Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop running XP Home. I also have a Compaq
Armada running NT 4.0. My internet comes through my Desktop and I ran the XP
home networking set-up but it is not recognizing my laptop. I have an
ethernet cord connecting the two machines. I've fooled around plenty on my
NT laptop and now I'm getting a pop-up that says "can't find DCHP" or
somethign like that.

I just want to really access internet through the laptop from my desktop.
An IT guy I work with said I need to have my laptop IP address similarly
set-up to my desktop - Not sure I have that correct.
Can anyone assist?

Tony,

Are you using a Crossover cable to connect your computers? That's the best bet.
For most computers, an Ethernet patch cable won't work - you have to use a
crossover cable.

Here's my article about using a crossover cable:

Thank you - I've read your post and it seems logical. I had an ethernet cord
hooked up between the two but I don't think I had IP addresses in the LAPTOP
running NT. I appreciate your post and I'll try what you suggest. I'm
hoping the cable I had is what would be considered a cross-over.

Well, try the suggestions in the article. If they don't work, then go to your
nearest electronics store, and buy a labeled crossover cable. If you can afford
to own 2 computers, you can afford to own an extra cable.

If that article doesn't provide a solution, then consider the "limited or no
connectivity" symptom.
