connecting to wireless

I've always been able to connect to a wireless network as long as the signal
strength was at least low, often very low, and the Mbps was at least 11, but
not lately. I've tried rebooting and repairing, two things that worked in the
past but do not help now. Is there some other setting I need to adjust?
 
What kind of WAP do you have. Can you check if the WAP is using the strongest
transmitting power?
