Connecting to the internet after a reload of XP

I have just reloaded Windows XP as my original copy would not boot up and was
just in a loop and restarted every time after the Welcome screen. All seems
as well as I could expect after the reload but seeing as I am a senior
citizen I would rather it had not happened at all. Unfortunately now that the
new XP is loaded and it looks OK except for the lack of desktop icons, I
don’t seem to be able to get onto the internet. I think the problem lies with
the new load not being able to see my Modem/Router as the Ethernet cable does
not register on the router or on the PC. How can I resolve this please? Thanks

Hi Charlie,

Go to the computer manufacturers website (if it's a major brand) and
enter your model number. From there go to the drivers page and look for
your ethernet drivers.

While you're at it, check Device Manager (Start, Run, type devmgmt.msc
and click OK) and see if there are any other devices not recognized.
You can download them at the same time.

XP provides many built-in drivers. In your case it's likely you do not
have your Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers installed. You can
use Device Manager in the Control Panel System Applet (Hardware
TAB) to show devices that are detected but have no drivers installed
for them. Any devices shown with a yellow exclamation point or a
Red X requires drivers or other actions to get them fully operating.

Sounds like your network adapter (or NIC - network interface card) needs a
driver. What is the brand/model number of your notebook or desktop computer?
It'll be better if you can tell us the name of the network adapter you're
using. Someone may be able to point you in the right direction to download
the correct driver.

Thanks gentlemen for trying to help me. I have been onto the maufacturers of
my PC Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P to try to get some help from them but after
spending fortune on a premium rate phone number i came to the conclusion that
if the driver isn't on the recovery driver disc then they cant help me. I
have downloaded several drivers from the manufacturers site but even though
when I have been into device manager and told it to update the driver and
browsed to my driver folder it cannot seem to associate itself with the
files. I really do not know what to do now? I have uninstalled the ethernet
controller and when I have rebooted it tells me that new hardware has been
detected but we just return to the position I was with the yellow question
mark. Fujitsu tell me the ethernet controller is a Realtek asus p5gd1 but
that does nothing for me. I would appreciate any further help on what I do
from here? Thanks again

Seeing that your efforts got you nowhere, you should start at the bottom and
find out the brand and model of your network adapter. Download and install a
tool like Aida (http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#aida32), then use
it to obtain the necessary details.

Is there a driver for this NIC on your drivers CD? If not, is there one on
the manufacturer's drivers page? If not then you will probably find one on
www.driverguide.com.

thanks for that. I have downloaded and run Aida and it cannot find an
ethernet controller. Perhaps this is the problem. Perhaps it is defunc? What
now buy another or buy a new PC? This one is about 4 years old so does not
owe me much. I was waiting for Windows 7 to come out. Perhaps I could buy an
USB wireless adapter for the desktop as the modem/router works fine to this
laptop. Which route do you think is the way to go? Is there a way of
resurrecting the existing Etherent Controller?
Thanks

Most motherboard based NICs can be enabled/disabled in the BIOS
setup. It's also likely your new XP has not had the Chipset driver added.
This is a system level driver that installs base drivers. In some cases the
NIC won't be indentified in Device Manager in it's native category but
may appear as "Unknown Device".
A USB Wireless is an option, but ~$35.00 is an expense you can avoid
if you can get the built-in Ethernet up and running.
Chipset drivers are usually Intel, nVidia, VIA ( or Hyperion ) and should
be posted on the manufacturer's website.

I have just had the ethernet controller board out to identify it but it is
anonymous. It has a Belkin chip in it. I have looked on the drivers disc that
came with the PC and under LAN are all of the manufacturers you have
mentioned below and then some. I have been in Device Manager and tried to
browse to each driver folder inturn to get the Ethernet to see it but
nothing. There used to be 4 leds lit on this card when it was working but now
it is dark. I think that it is an ex card!

Here's the link to your MB
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Select Product (Motherboard)
Select Type (Socket775)
Select Models (P5GD1)
Select OS (WinXP)

I would try Version V7.24.1.3 and stay away from the beta version. A better
route may be to go with a different NIC; I have not had any good experiences
with on-board ones. They all seem to crap out on me after a year or two. I
picked up a NetGear gigabyte NIC at Staple's for ~$12 a while back. Works
fine. The on-board one will have to be disabled in BIOS first, though, then
the new one and its drivers installed.

Presumably this is a desktop PC. I would buy a new Ethernet adapter. They
cost very little and you get a driver CD at the same time.

Somewhere on the card is the part number. On my Belkin card, it's between
the Belkin chip and the edge connector; for example P/N 141121100201B
REV:02. Putting the part number in Google, I found out this one is a Belkin
F5D5000 10/100 NIC.

Thanks to you all again. You have given me some great advice. After banging
my head for the best part of 5 hours looking for drivers to try to resurrect
a broken part, not to mention 15 minutes wasted on a Premium rate phone call,
I have done the easy thing and gone out and bought myself a wireless USB
dongle. It works great and will be handy for old lap tops. I wish I had done
it hours ago! Thanks again
