Connecting to network resources from a laptop running XP Home

Hello all,
I originally posted this on the 'Windows XP basics' group but
did not receive any answers. I am not sure if I can post the same question
here again but here goes anyway.

I have a problem with connecting a laptop running XP Home to
our network. Here's our current setup:

We have a domain with a file server which this laptop is trying to access.
The server runs Server 2003 OS and also functions as the PDC. I created an
account for the user on our domain and the laptop is running XP Home with a
default work group that was already present. At first, the laptop was not
able to recognize our domain under 'My Network Places -> Entire Network ->
Microsoft Windows Network'. I tried to map a network drive and it always
comes back with 'The specified network path could not be found'.

After reading a few discussions on this thread, I understand that XP Home
cannot connect to a domain automatically though there are some workarounds
possible.. I tried to use a workaround specified in the link below which was
posted on another thread.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/wxphdoms.htm

1. I made the name of the 'Work group' on the lap top the same as our domain
name.
2. Secondly, I created another account on the laptop with the same
"username/password" combination as his domain "username/password
combination". I rebooted and logged into the laptop with the new username.

I still have the same problem. I do not see the file server on our domain
listed at all..so there is nothing to click on etc. I tried to map the drives
anyway hoping that the server would be automatically recognized. Again no
luck and I see the message:
'The specified network path could not be found'. What am I doing wrong here?
I am able to ping all computers on the network with no problems ..so the
connection seems ok. Also upgrading to XP Pro is not an option since this is
an external user.

Could anyone shed more light on this matter?

Thanks,
-Shishir

(NOTE: The user is able to use our DHCP server and get access to the
internet etc with no problems)

Try:

Start/Run \\IPaddressofServer

If you want to map a drive, try:
net use X: \\IPaddresssofServer\share /user:domainname\username password
