Connecting to internet without permission

Hi,

I know that having your computer connect itself to the
internet without permission is a common sign of having
some malware running on it, but I'm reasonably confident
I have no malware doing this, MSAS, AdAware and McAfee
Virus Scan all report my machine as clean, I have no
unusual processes running and no unusual items in my
startup and no other symptoms of any malware. However
I've noticed over recent weeks that my machine has
started to connect by itself every so often, most
commonly 30 seconds or so after it has booted for the
first time on a given day. I'm wondering if it's the MSAS
autoupdate that is actually causing it to connect when it
tries to check for updates/signatures.

I've noticed that if I run the McAfee update task whilst
I'm not connected to the internet the job just
reschedules itself for a few hours later, it does not
cause the machine to connect, however if I run MSAS
Update then that causes my machine to connect
automatically.

I've had experience in the past of the Real Networks
(Real Player) autoupdater making my machine connect by
itself (if I'd been connected for a while, then
disconnect from the internet, about 15 minutes later it
would try to check for updates again and reconnect me.
Turning off autoupdate stopped the issue), so I know
that 'proper' software can cause this to happen, not just
malware.

Just wondering if anyone else had experienced MSAS doing
this or had any comments.

I connect via ADSL however it's set up as a dial up
networking connection so it doesn't automatically connect
on boot, it just autoconnects when an internet connection
is required.

Thanks

Steve

I connect through an external ADSL modem so it uses dial
up networking just like dial up does (just a lot
faster !).

Thanks for your advice, would be interested to know if
anyone else has this issue and suspects MSAS or has any
other comments.

Thanks

Steve
