Connecting to internet on it's own

How can I find out what is causing my computer to connect on it's own? I
think something is trying to run, but how do I find out what?

Right click My Computer icon, choose Manage/Services and
Applications/Services
In the right pane, select Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and double
click
Use the Startup type drop box and choose Disabled.

Follow-up with malware cleanup.
