I was conncecting to my desktop computer running XP from my laptop running
Vista for several weeks with no problem. Now all of a sudden I get a "access
denied see administrator for permission" when I try to access the desktop.
This is a home network and I am the only user/administrator. What happened?
Has a security setting somewhere got changed? The laptop will connect but
won't let me access any files.

Many possibilities. Check the permission settings, the sharing and password protect under Network Sharing center. Or this link may help too.

Vista Permission IssuesVista Permission Issues. If you receive access denied, it could be the permission ... Solved: Vista sharing - Access denied .... Vista Home Premium wireless ...
