connecting to data projector

Connect someone else's notebook to data projector - it doesn't automatically
connect or show desktop on projected screen
What do I do after going to:
Start
Control Panel
Display
Settings

Linda,

chances are there's a 'magic key' combination to make the laptop send the
signal out the back

look on the laptop for a key marked 'Fn'

Press it and hold it down,

then look along the number keys (or functions keys F1, - F10 etc)

and press what looks like a rectangle (or anything that remotely resembles a
screen)

the first press should make the laptop put the image out to the projector
only
then next press should be both laptop screen and external screen
then back to laptop screen only
