Hi, Can I connect my winxp pro PC to a cable modem without installing the
software that comes with the modem? (That software somehow replaces the
windows logo in ie with that of comcast) If yes, how?

Thanks

My cable modem did not require any special software to work. I just plugged
it into the NIC and Windows had no problem going online.

Of course you can.
Once you know the MAC address of your PC's NIC card, and have the modem
"provisioned"
You may need to make specific firewall settings to initially connect to the
modem and the outside world.

Information needed
IP address of Modem (client side) and internet side after assignment by IP
(Usually dynamic)
IP address to be assigned to client PC (or auto assign via dhcp)
PC MAC address
Normally, a cable modem comes with the necessary ethernet cable, or/and USB
cable needed.
Your IP's web site is usually a good place to look for any settings that
might be specific to your area.
